There are different types of sedation, the most common are:

Oral Sedation: Oral Sedation is when the dentist uses an oral sedative pill to reduce the patient’s anxiety. Oral Sedation is typically used during shorter dental procedures.
Nitrous Oxide: Also known as “laughing gas”, nitrous oxide is administered using a facemask connected to a regulated tank. This sedation allows the patient to relax while remaining co-operative. Nitrous oxide sedation is typically used in cases of mild to moderate anxiety. It also wears off quickly so the patient can resume their daily activities.
IV Sedation: IV (Intravenous) sedation is the type of sedation that is normally recommended for patients that experience high levels of anxiety. IV Sedation requires the dentist and the staff to be licensed to practice this kind of treatment. They continuously monitor the patient’s vital signs during the procedure, and it can be preferred when a large dental procedure is needed to ensure that it is completed on time.
